I will be speaking on Slenderman and my new theory of "Psychoparousia" at this weekend's MUFON Conference in Erie Pennsylvania. Come by and say hello!

You know you're going to have to talk about the stabbing.

A few quick thoughts.
(1) I suppose this could have happened as the result of just about any story. Maybe.
(2) On the other hand, there is a community of people who pretend that Slenderman is real, or that he is maybe really after all real. No one really entertains such fantasies about Lex Luthor, Darth Vader, or Sauron.
(3) Twelve year olds are usually able to tell the difference between reality and outright make-believe. Besides, Google, which they probably used to find information about Slenderman, shows very quickly exactly who invented the characters Lex Luthor and when, who invented Darth Vader and when, who invented Sauron and when, and who invented Slenderman and when.

"Who is that Slender Man actually based off?" Real child abductors.

There's no real mystery to creating a scary monster. First, take something that people are already afraid of. Then you make that threat vastly more powerful, so that we are helpless and hopeless before it. Finally, you twist it just enough to put it into the "uncanny valley".
If you start with fear of technology, you might end up with space aliens. If you start with fear of government control, you might end up with the Men in Black. Eric Knudsen started with the fear of child abductors and ended up with Slender Man.
