My official stance on MUFON and the racial issues that have arose

As the fallout from the PA MUFON Director's racial post grows, I have remained silent just to see what was what. I believe that it is not best to be quick to judge. But as the light is shined on certain posts, I cant help but feel sad. As someone with Native American and African American blood and heritage, I am discouraged, outraged and wishing that people could see beyond race or differences and embrace the minutia of our humanity as part of a grand tapestry. I have fought bullies all my life and racism at it's core is bullying. How can we hope to reach out to possible alien life if we can't love and accept those of our own species? Therefore until the racism is addressed, I must too in solidarity with Nick Redfern and others, sever ties with MUFON. People, ALL people are precious and made in God's image and deserve respect, love and dignity. Racism is evil, and must be addressed and disarmed.

Sheepsquatch of Waterford PA

Decades before the Sheepsquatch sightings in Boone County West Virginia, a very similar creature roamed the woods of Northwestern Pennsylvania.

In the early 1970s an abominable creature terrorized the small rural town of Waterford Pennsylvania.

It was a humanoid creature that was covered in fur. Large horns adorned its inhuman head. Devilish hooves sprouted where feet should otherwise be. It lurked in farm fields, stalking the unwitting animal in a desire to tear it apart and feed on its flesh and blood.
It was the Waterford Sheep-man.

Hundreds of people witnessed this creature, from school children to adult farmers. Sometimes it was also known as the “Goat-man”, for no one really knew its true diabolical origin. For a few brief years in the mid 70s it held the attention of the small community, ridiculed by some but feared by many.

Marylin knew of the goat-man legend as a teenager in the 70s; but along with the stories she had also seen it with her own eyes on more than one occasion. “I lived on Baghdad Road and I saw this figure running across the dirt road at one point near the old sawmill.” She remembers that at the time there was much talk about the legend, with many people catching a glimpse of the creature darting across the road or into the brush along farm fields. She had a second encounter with the monstrous when she was 17, “He was there that one night I drove home and right before I turned into my driveway, there he was, running across the road and into the woods.”

Waterford native Richard Galbraith knows the legend well, as a child he was told, “Don’t let the Sheep-man get ya!” He was warned to avoid the area of Pennsylvania Route 19 on the outskirts of the city at night, or else the same fate would befall him that happened to so many unwitting animals; the blood crazed sheep-man would tear him apart.

Richard was wise to take the warnings to heart; for there were many alleged incidents of the sheep-man violently attacking humans as well as ravaging livestock.

Herb Kinney, a Waterford native and businessman, knew the terror of the sheep-man firsthand. He had a friend who was a victim of the ungodly creature as it lay wait for him on top of the Waterford covered bridge on Niemeyer Road that spans LeBoeuf creek. Herb recounts the story in his own words,

It was always said the sheepman lived in a cave on Baghdad road. He was know to frequent the covered bridge south east of town on East street. He was said to hide up in the rafters of the old bridge and jump down and terrorize young lovers that had parked in the bridge.
Two couples from Erie were traveling into the bridge late one summer night in a dark blue Ford Mustang convertible with the top down. It had started to sprinkle so the pulled inside the bridge to put the top down when they where attacked. The boys fought off the creature and peeled out filling the bridge with smoke from the burning rubber of their tires. The roof to the car was damaged ripped torn and mangled to the point it had to be replaced. All for of the young people insisted the incident really happed, telling the tale to their parents. The parents fearing embarrassment and would not allow any police report to be filed.”

Herb reports that the sheep-man was described as over six feet tall with light gray or white hair covering its body. The creature had two very large horns atop of its misshapen head and long canine teeth. Instead of hands the monster had sharp claws like something out of a horror movie. Although by this description many would tend to associate the sheep-man with a type of werewolf creature or even a sasquatch, Herb firmly asserts that the creature was never associated with any other creature and has always been known by its moniker as the sheep or goat-man.

Another longtime Waterford resident, Sally B. has a personal connection to the sheep-man and its violent demeanor, “He was supposed to live on the back side of my dad's farm- woods rd. In the 60's it was a dirt path with grass growing in the center.
He was a combo of the crazy man with the hook hand and part sheep. He would chase all parkers from the road.”

What was the Waterford sheep-man? Was it a mere childish fantasy borne out of the chilling chatter of urban youth with an over abundant imagination? Or was it something unnatural, called from beyond by unseen forces into our world in order to spread fear and dread throughout this otherwise serene community?

Intrigued, Erie County historian and paranormal investigator Heidi Kirclich LaDow decided to find out. After many years of exploring unknown phenomenon and paranormal investigation, Heidi was an ideal person to root out the truth behind the legend. Her investigative team, Flagship Paranormal, has examined a multitude of paranormal claims in Erie County and beyond with attention to scientific detail and historical accuracy. After putting her detective hat on, she put out the question to social network sites as well as other avenues of discovery. After hunting in many avenues of exploration she eventually received an anonymous email which said,

"I will let you know that the Sheepman story, as far as I know, started in the Vocational Agriculture students heads and the fable grew until the general public adopted it as a local legend. I heard of sheepman in 1970 and as a 7th grader it awed me and others. It began that a man could have sex with a sheep, after that happened, an offspring half and half was produced. Sheepman. What started as a dirty little story grew into a small town legend. I ain't telling no more!"

Did this anonymous source have in depth knowledge of the legends origin? If so, why remain anonymous? Often in many urban legends the story grows and incorporates other aspects unto its overall myth. Some of these are imagined origins of the phenomenon, and it begs the question in this case: what came first the Sheep-man or the taboo sexual element? Of course the sheep story is an offshoot of the stereotypical cliché of bestiality associated with animal husbandry found in the viewpoint of many who ridicule rural life. Who can say if this is the true origin of the legend or just a crass explanation invented by a few adolescent youth at the time?

Nevertheless, the countryside surrounding Waterford was abuzz in the 1970s with stories and sightings of the creature known as sheep-man. It seemed the legend faded with the decade for there have not been any sightings of the creature since the close of the 70s. But then again, the average lifespan of a sheep is usually no more than 10 years, so what should we expect from a creature that is part sheep anyway?

Charlie, Charlie a viral marketing stunt

Viral marketing is best when its not noticeable as viral marketing. That is what happened with the latest twitter trend, the #CharlieCharlieChallenge. It seems it was all a viral marketing plot to raise awareness of a new movie  The Gallows from Warner Brothers.

Many doubt that it is just a viral marketing campaign, and it is, in essence not just a viral marketing campaign. Anything that asks youth to summon a demon is not a great thing. Even if you do not believe in demons. Many people can be manipulated into believing supernatural forces are at work to ruin their lives, and it could be that Charlie Charlie is going to have an impact on the mental well being and emotional stability of a small but impressionable portion of the population.

Of course, tradition and experience tells me that if you open yourself up to demonic influence it can have a catastrophic influence on others. Real spirits can enter in and take that challenge even if it was not intended for them. Because you have announced that you want to play. And boy, they want to play as well. But you are the toy.

However, real possession or oppression is very rare, and the majority of those playing the #charliechalriechallenge will never have a problem and chalk the experience up as a weird trend they participated in, like the ice bucket challenge of last year. But because it never has affect you in a negative way, does not mean it could not affect someone else. It can be a trigger for an emotional incident, or it could be the opening of a dark portal for someone's sanity. We tend to forget we are not all the same and something that seems silly to some can be devastating to others.

I just hope this is the beginning of the end for the #charliecharliechallenge

Recent Resurrections and the Zombie Apocalypse

In the past few weeks there have been 2 disturbing stories about people who  were declared dead rising from the grave...so to speak.  First there was the report that 2 Ebola patients from Africa rose from the grave, this first came to public awareness in this allAfrica news article:

Then just this week we hear another story from greece where a woman was buried only for people at the funeral to hear the woman screaming inside the burial vault, and there was an attempt to rescue her, but she had died of asphyxiation before they could get her out of the ground.

So what is going on here? Is a zombie apocalypse drawing nigh?

Throughout history physicians have made mistakes and patients have been prematurely pronounced dead. You still hear about it once in a while in modern times, when someone 'awakes' in the morgue. But it became so rampant and such a fear that in the 17th and 18th centuries many people were buried with what was essentially a premature burial alarm system.
If the person buried would regain consciousness, they would pull the cable  and the bell would ring.
Can you imagine walking in a cemetery only to hear those bells ring? But according to various accounts, some were actually rescued by this system.

Today with our modern technology, a misdiagnosis of death is quite rare, but it still happens. Usually the patient's recovery is a short lived one. They awake in the morgue or embalmers table and are rushed to the Emergency Room at a local hospital, only to die soon after. The illness was mortal, but the doctors a bit premature.

So Zombie Apocalypse? Naw. But then again you never know!
Someone call Norman Reedus!

The Beast in the Dark

In the summer of 1986, the time between my sophomore and junior year at Nyack College, I went on a summer long missionary assignment to West Africa.

It was an exciting time; we travelled through the jungle and bush land to get to the missionary compound in Burkina Faso. The culture was in the throes of change, pro Khadafy militants had just seized the capital the year before and the country was full of militants with guns. Even the children had guns! I remember well our driver giving a ride to a girl of 8 or 9 who wielded an AK-47 very nonchalantly as it bounced up and down with the barrel pointed toward my head as we made our way down the pot hole littered dirt road in the wilderness. Yes, these were exciting times indeed!

But however chilling the civil turmoil was at the time, the real off putting situations in which I found myself in that summer were in the realm of the supernatural.

I've talked about some of them before, most notably the encounter with a cryptid worshiped as a god of fertility by locals around Banfora. But most of my time in Burkina Faso was on the road, going from remote town to remote town to preach, sing and show a movie on the life of Christ. We would pull into a small remote town on the savanna which was home to a mere handful of mud brick buildings in the afternoon and by evening the entire area was filled with thousands of people. They had come from miles around just to see a movie and hear songs songs and a message. In the evening, after the show, we often had a wide array of hosts who gave us a place to sleep overnight. Some were indigenous church leaders, fellow missionaries and relief workers.

It was one evening after a large gathering in a remote village that I had a very odd and disturbing encounter at a relief worker’s home.

The relief worker welcomed us into his small home. He was in the deep savannah to help with agricultural and modern infrastructures for the many small villages in the area. In this remote location, the well water was infested with parasites. The outhouses were crawling with flying cockroaches that were a half foot long. And the house itself was small, there was only one bedroom. So with a group of our size, one person had to sleep outside and I volunteered. There were rumors of bands of robbers that traversed the scant forested areas that appeared hodge podge over the countryside. While they rarely came close to these remote villages, I was told to take my bush knife with me as I made my bed atop our aged and battered Land Rover.
The village was located on the edge of one of the sparse wooded areas, where most of the trees were cultivated bananas of various height. The dirt road where the aid worker resided contained six to eight mud brick buildings and a few concrete block houses. The wide road was one of two in the village and it was on the main north-south highway that connected the larger towns to the south with the capital to the north. The only electricity in the area came from our generators which lay within the Rover that I slept upon, so the street was pitch black.

The darkness that you encountered at night in Africa is different than the darkness which you encounter during nights in most American cities. Often in America the light pollution dulls the brilliance of the night sky; but in Africa with there not being a light for almost a hundred miles, the skies are alive.

I was lying back enjoying the view of the cosmos before me when I heard something move at the end of the street. Lying flat, I tilted my head in the direction of the noise and in the pitch black I saw movement. It was something BIG. A large black shape meandered through the street, heading slowly in my direction. I froze in fear as I realized this massive shape moved on four legs, with a pronounced pelvic swing as it moved. If I was in North America, I would have sworn that it was a bear that was moving through that deserted evening street in darkest Africa. But it was Africa, and there were no such native creatures as this for hundreds of miles. Lions once roamed the savanna territory, but the last one to be seen in the area was over a hundred years before this. Whatever it was, it made its way to the parked Rover and began to circle the vehicle. I barely heard a thing, but I saw the shadow pace around the vehicle for a tense minute or two. I had slowly pulled my bush blade out of its sheath, expecting whatever animal it was to suddenly jump in attack. But it never did. Whatever it was finally walked away and I heard the occasional ruffle slowly recede behind me.

What was it I encountered that hot summer in Africa decades ago?

Was it a straying lion, roaming back into ancestral territory? Physically, that could be the only explanation. However, there were old missionary stories of shaman who could shape shift and prowl the savanna at night. Many had claimed to see a shaman transform into a giant snake or jungle cat. Or could it have been a territorial spirit, taking a shape to inspire fear? I had heard many stories as such while in the area as well. Or maybe it was the specter of a long lost pride of lions who had roamed the area for millennia until climate change had turned their lush jungle into a dry desert borderland.

I will never know, but I am glad it went away. I had never prayed so hard in my life.

Until Next Time,
Pastor Swope

Animals Fleeing Yellowstone Park Sense Upcoming Earthquake? Or Volcanic Eruption?

Recent sightings of animals fleeing Yellowstone have many wondering if the animals are fleeing because of a possible upcoming eruption of the Yellowstone Super Volcano. Read about it here on The Epoch Times: http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/593833-yellowstone-volcano-eruption-in-2014-some-believe-animals-are-fleeing-park-see-it-as-an-alert/

The last major eruption of Yellowstone was 2.1 million years ago and the resulting ash blanketed the entire western United States from Idaho to Texas and as far west as California. Such an eruption now would kill millions and probably destroy civilization as we now know it. With all the earthquakes happening on the West Coast, it makes one wonder....

Pastor Swope on "Monsters and Mysteries"

One of the "Monsters and Mysteries" episodes that I appear in is now in rotation on the Destination America Channel. It was originally taped to be about Slenderman, but the creator of Slenderman wanted a little cash to use the name, so the producers instead re-taped it about the Rake. Sorry for the mis-match of data, they taped a bunch of different things and edited as they wished.

Next up will be the Presque Isle UFO landing of 1966 that should appear soon, it will be in a Bigfoot/UFO connection segment.
