Ghost Hunting Tips: Makeshift EVPs

With all the Paranormal Investigators and groups out there, there are a lot of personal tricks of the trade that would be of great value to others. With that in mind I will gather together some videos and share them here with a link to the groups website. Once a week a new tip will be highlighted along with my regular content which will come regularly.

Here's the first tip from VIPER Virginia Investigators of Paranormal, Education and Research.

"In this "Budget Ghost Hunting" tutorial Mike St. Clair from VIPER Paranormal shows you how to safely disable your digital or analog voice recorder's microphone for recording EVP. It does not harm your recorder so you can still use it with the microphone as well."

  1. How do you justify asking questions and awaiting answers via EVP as anything other than necromancy? OK, probably there's nothing wrong with speaking to a ghost who appears in front of you, but to seek one out in order to try to initiate a back-and-forth conversation really seems to cross a line.

  2. Hi Howard,

First off, I love gadgets and messing with tech. And as with all things it depends on who messes with the gadget. I personally see it as a tool to learn who or what you are dealing with.

As with my other articles, you have to be careful not to believe everything you hear. One of the greatest perils of those who do paranormal investigating is that they trust and carry on a complicated diatribe with an unseen entity. It could lead to oppression, mental health issues, manipulation and possibly possession. I have seen it happen. You become too familiar with a spirit and they tend to hang around, closer and closer.

It is a tool to be used.

When at my church most evps that investigators find are giggles and laughter of little children.

    I find that pretty cool.

  3. I think it's more a matter of who initiates contact. For example, any of us may randomly come into contact with someone who later turns out to be a terrorist -- he may be looking for the bathroom. If he later commits a crime, you might feel weird and might even be called in to see if you picked up any details of his behavior, but your connection to him would be innocent. This would be analogous to most people in traditional ghost sightings -- ones who encounter a ghost they aren't looking for.

On the other hand, you could hang out at jihadist blogs and make some friends there. Even if you don't break laws in doing that, your behavior and motivations would be regarded as suspicious and you would probably be questioned more sharply by police if one of your new friends committed a terrorist act. Your association with the terrorist is no longer quite so unintentional or innocent because you sought him out. I think there are analogous dangers with seeking out spirits.

By the way, devils are much older than you and (no offense) quite a bit more clever. If they know you are going to disbelieve anything you hear from them, they will tell you the truth and laugh at you for disbelieving it. And if you know that ... the only safe thing is neither to believe or disbelieve, but to completely ignore what they say; and the best way to ignore what they say is to never hear it in the first place.

There is such a thing as the sin of curiosity. There are some things we are better off not knowing. As a simple example, imagine you discovered a way to steal $50k each year from the government in a way that could not be detected or traced and deposit the money directly into an offshore bank account that doesn't share information with the US. Maybe you wouldn't actually use the method, but just knowing that you could get away with it would eat at you. You have no business knowing how to commit the perfect crime, and trying to find out how would be an example of the sin of curiosity.

If you want to pass a message on to the holy angels, you can do that through prayer. If you want them to deliver you a singing telegram, your out of line and likely to be disappointed. If you just want to hear back from a spirit, and you don't care what kind, you're again venturing into an area where you have no business, and any knowledge you gain may not be good for you.
